Description
Elamipretide (also known as SS-31) is a synthetic, mitochondria-targeting tetrapeptide. It works by binding to cardiolipin on the inner mitochondrial membrane, stabilizing the membrane structure, improving ATP energy production, and decreasing pathogenic oxidative stress.
Mechanism of Action
- Cardiolipin Binding: It selectively and rapidly concentrates inside the mitochondria, binding to cardiolipin (a lipid essential for organizing the electron transport chain).
- Energy Production & Protection: By maintaining the structural integrity of the mitochondrial cristae, it boosts the efficiency of cellular bioenergetics while mitigating the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS)
